How much maternity leave can I take in South Africa?

By law, an employee may take at least 4 consecutive months’ maternity leave to commence 4 weeks before birth. This is usually unpaid leave, unless stated otherwise in the employment contract.

Unless approved by a doctor, no employee may work for 6 weeks after the birth of a child.
